Some Plants Should Never Be Left on the Windowsill

Though there are some exceptions, most plants should not actually be left on the windowsill. Even though the sun is one of the main life sources for plants, its light should still be absorbed in moderation. Too much sunlight will, in fact, cause most plants to begin to dry up and face irreparable damage. Here, we are going to discuss where to place houseplants so that they can continue to thrive and add beauty to the home.

Before getting started, it is worth mentioning the importance of discussing your plant with the florist at the time of purchase. Even those with a green thumb can benefit from getting some information from the source. Obviously, not all plants need to be cared for in the same way, so it is best to be informed about what exactly you are dealing with.

The Plants That Never Should Go on the Windowsill

The list of plants that should not be left on the windowsill is naturally way too long for the purpose of this article, but it is worth mentioning that among this long list is the Poinsettia.  This holiday favorite is particularly prone to drying out. However, if cared for properly, it is possible to enjoy the same Poinsettia next Christmas. Be aware, though, that its leaves are poisonous, so make sure to keep them away from children and pets.

Another common plant found in the home is the orchid. This plant also needs some attention when it comes to exposure to light. Though it thrives with plenty of sunshine, the plant still should not be exposed to direct light. The same also goes for the Cyclamen plant.

The last common houseplant we will talk about is the winter cactus. This plant benefits from indirect sunlight and should be kept away from direct sunlight. It thrives best when exposed to temperatures above 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit).

To summarize, all of the plants we mentioned should be placed in areas of the house that receive moderate shade throughout the day. While sunlight is generally beneficial, it should not directly shine on these plants. Additionally, ensure that you do not place your plants too close to radiators in the home, as the heat can negatively affect them.
