Sansevieria, Did You Know That There is a Trick to Make It Bloom?

It’s pretty surprising, but Sansevieria trifasciata, commonly known as mother-in-law’s tongue, is indeed capable of flowering. I know, most of us have it at home and have never even remotely suspected that this plant could bloom. The key to its flowering lies in providing the right conditions for Dracaena trifasciata, its scientific name.

How to make Sansevieria flower?

Sansevieria trifasciata is an incredibly hardy plant, and it tolerates any light or humidity condition well. That’s why it’s a top choice among houseplants, appealing even to those with minimal plant knowledge or a history of unsuccessful gardening.

Once you grasp the basic tricks for nurturing your Sansevieria and promoting its rapid propagation, you’re on the right track. Yet, perhaps it’s worth going the extra mile and attempting to make it bloom. While it may not be easy, it’s certainly not impossible.

In practice, what we are going to do is recreate the climatic conditions of its natural habitat.

First of all, avoid watering it every day, as excessive moisture can lead to root rot. Sansevieria should be watered sparingly and only when the soil is completely dry. During winter, limit watering to just a couple of times a month at most.

Regarding light, position it near a well-lit window to have vibrant, healthy, and green leaves. Keep in mind that Sansevieria is a slow-growing plant, producing a maximum of 3-4 leaves per year. If you observe bent leaves, it’s a sign that it requires more light.

It’s important to note that Sansevieria doesn’t require pruning; simply remove dry leaves to prevent diseases. At the end of spring and the beginning of summer, apply a small amount of fertilizer once a month, at least until autumn approaches.

Since we want to make it flower, you will need to use a flower-specific fertilizer enriched with essential nutrients. If you’ve followed the care instructions diligently, by the end of summer, your Sansevieria will reward you with blossoms that emit a delightful vanilla fragrance.
